Frequently asked questions

Why should I be concerned about Part P of the Building Regulations?

Part P imposes a legal requirement on electrical work carried in dwellings in England and Wales. Lack of compliance with this requirement is a criminal offence.

Why has Part P been introduced?

Part P has been introduced to reduce the risk of fire or injury caused by faulty electrical installations.

How do I comply with this new requirement?

Electrical installation work that is carried out in accordance with the national standard, BS: 7671, will comply with Part P.

How can I be sure that my electrical work will be carried out in accordance with BS: 7671?

You should use an electrical installer that is registered with one of the government approved self-certification schemes to carry out the work, i.e. a ‘Competent Person’. The work of such a firm has been inspected, and is subsequently monitored, to ensure that it is carried out in accordance with BS:7671

Where can I find such a firm?

A search facility is available on this site through which you can find firms that are registered with the BREC Ltd self-certification scheme.
