Frequently asked questions

If I am not registered with a Part P self-certification scheme, can a firm that is registered with a scheme certificate my work?

No. Registration with a self-certification scheme entitles you to certify your own work and nobody else's.

What should I do about my electrical installation work while I am waiting to be assessed and registered with an approved Part P self-certification scheme.

Until you are registered with an approved Part P scheme your work must be notified to the appropriate local authority Building Control department.

Is there anything in place to assist individuals who have worked in the electrical industry for a long time and want to join a Part P scheme but do not have any formal qualifications?

Yes. There is a short course called the EAL Domestic Installer course - see the list of Training Courses for full details.

What must I do, and how much will it cost me, to put in place arrangements for an insurance-backed warranty?

Once you have been assessed and successfully registered with the BREC scheme you will be contacted by the insurance company ECIC who will provide you with full details of the warranty, including the information that you will need to give to your customers. The warranty will not cost you anything. The warranty is optional and payment is made by the customer – if he or she decides to purchase one. All queries concerning the warranty should be directed to ECIC on 0845 880 1050.

How does the direct debit method of payment for job reporting work?

You will receive a monthly email stating how many job credits have been used over the past month and how much is to be debited from your account for that period.

What should I do when notifying work carried out in a fairly new house and the website does not recognise the postcode?

The address finder is updated through Royal Mail every few months. If the address finder does not recognise the postcode you have entered you should select ‘new build’ and enter the postcode under the ‘County’ field.
