Certificates

On completion of the work, there are a number of important tasks that an approved firm is responsible for carrying out to ensure that the work is properly documented and the local authority Building Control department has the information it requires. This will ensure that in future years the customer will be able to demonstrate that the work was properly executed and that, should any further electrical work be necessary, it can be carried out safely.

BS 7671 Installation Certificate

An approved firm should provide this certificate as a matter of course. It is needed in order to comply with the Building Regulations and its principal use is to enable the firm that carries out any future electrical work in the property to do so safely.

In the downloads section of this site, you can find an example of a 'Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate' and a 'Small Electrical Installation Works Certificate' that you can freely use. In addition to this, there are versions of these certificates complete with Part P logo, certificate number and company name pre-filled. To use these you will need to login to the Job Registration site and use the versions in the downloads area.

Building Regulations Compliance Certificate

This document simply states that the work carried out by the firm complies with the Building Regulations. Click here for an example certificate

This certificate may be requested, for example, by a purchaser's solicitor when the customer sells the property. Looking further ahead, it may be required as one of the documents that makes-up the 'Home Information Pack' when it is introduced in 2007.

The certificate will be posted to the customer by BRE Certification Ltd within 30 days of completion of the work.  To enable this, it is important that we are notified of the work in good time.  Any overdue certificates will be alerted to us by the customer.

Notification to your local authority's Building Control department

The scheme provider, i.e. BRE Certification, must provide information to the relevant local authority concerning the work carried out. This information is then publicly available, for example, as part of the searches carried out during the sale of a property.

The information required by BRE Certification is essentially the same as that provided by the firm in order to produce a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. Local authorities must have this information within 30 days of the completion of work and, hence, you must in turn provide your scheme operator with the required information promptly.
