Does Part P apply to me?

Work on fixed electrical installations in dwellings should comply with the following requirements :-

  • Reasonable provision shall be made in the design, installation, inspection and testing of electrical installations in order to protect persons from fire or injury; and
  • Sufficient information shall be provided so that persons wishing to operate, maintain or alter an electrical installation can do so with reasonable safety.

These requirements apply in England and Wales, without exception, to anyone who carries out electrical work in dwellings.

In addition, work that is subject to the Building Regulations must be notified to a building control body before it is commenced. In the case of Part P there are two exceptions to this requirement for pre-notification :-

  1. Certain defined minor work is not notifiable;
  2. Work carried out by a Competent Person, i.e. a firm registered with an Approved Part P Self-certification Scheme, does not have to be notified.

If you answer 'yes' to one or more of the questions listed immediately below then you are carrying out work in scope to Part P that should be notified to a building control body - unless you are registered with a Competent Person Scheme.

Answer the following Questions:

  • Does the work involve connection of an additional circuit(s) to a new or existing consumer unit?
     Yes    No
  • Does the work involve complete re-wiring?
     Yes    No
  • Does the work involve replacement of cables resulting from damage to more than one existing circuit?
     Yes    No
  • Does the work involve installations in kitchens, bathrooms, or other Special Locations as defined by Part P including:
    • Installing a new circuit e.g. shower or cooker?
       Yes    No
    • Alterations to existing circuits including addition or relocation of equipment/accessories e.g. light fitting or socket outlet?
       Yes    No

If you answered 'NO' to all the questions above then you do not need to notify your electrical work to building control.
